Cardiff is top choice for Bristol first time buyer

A first-time buyer from Bristol has picked Cardiff as the ideal place to get on the property ladder.

Proving the Welsh capital is anything but run of the mill, NHS organ transplant manager Nick Hirons has secured his first home at Lovell Homes’ The Mill development in Canton.

The 38-year-old decided the time was right to get a place of his own but was faced with ever increasing prices in Bristol making options limited. So, in a bid to move out from his parents’ home sooner rather than later, he expanded his search in to Wales.

And a one-bedroom apartment at The Mill development provided the perfect solution. Not only were the prices within reach but commuting back to Bristol for work turned out to be as quick as before and also cost effective since the abolition of the Severn Bridge toll.

Nick was also able to take advantage of Help to Buy Wales, making the move even more affordable. Buyers need just a 5% deposit and the remaining amount is made up of a 75% mortgage and a 20% equity loan.

Nick said, “I was quickly becoming priced out of the market in Bristol so needed to widen my search.  I didn’t know anyone in Cardiff but I love the city; it has everything, great nightlife, excellent shopping, access to stunning countryside and then there’s the beach!

“When I worked out the pros and cons of moving further away, it quickly became apparent that living in Cardiff would only enhance my quality of life.  Plus, The Mill development itself is such a find. It’s just out of the city, so nice and quiet but close enough to walk in to town and the train station. I’m very happy with my choice.”

Julie Bowen, sales director for Lovell Homes South Wales and South West said, “We’ve long known that Cardiff is a fantastic place to get on the ladder. In fact, according to recent Rightmove research it’s currently tracking as the most buoyant market in the UK, with a 4% house price increase, so it’s no surprise that buyers from out of area are making a move to the city.

“The Help to Buy Wales scheme is also a great way to buy, helping first time buyers as well as people with a home to sell to make a move on or up the property ladder.  So, in summary we’d encourage anyone considering making the move to Cardiff to do so now.”

Located on Sanatorium Road, The Mill offers a range of one and two-bedroom apartments as well as two, three and four-bedroom houses just two miles from Cardiff city centre.

The emerging community is a partnership between Lovell and Tirion Group and Cadwyn Housing Association.  Formerly a disused paper mill, the project is breathing new life in an important brownfield site and delivering much needed open market and affordable new homes.

The development and show homes are open daily from 10am to 5pm. Call 029 2060 06766 for details. Prices currently start from £135,995 for a one-bedroom apartment, £183,995 for a two-bedroom apartment, from £212,995 for a two-bedroom house, from £269,995 for a three-bedroom house and from £318,995 for a four-bedroom house.
