Visit the Lovell stand at this year’s Ely and Caerau Festival to find out about training and job opportunities available through one of Wales’ largest regeneration programmes.

Discover more about construction careers by talking to the team behind high-profile Cardiff housing development, The Mill, Canton, at the community festival, taking place at the Western Leisure Centre field, Caerau Lane Ely CF5 5HJ from 12 to 5 pm on Saturday, 8 July.

Lovell and representatives from Tirion Group and Cadwyn Housing Association – the partnership creating The Mill – will be giving out information about jobs and opportunities to gain industry experience and training on the development which is bringing 800 new-build homes for open market sale and rent to the former Arjo Wiggins paper mill site, just west of the city centre.

The new houses and apartments include 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association - for the Tirion Group. The scheme is going ahead with the support of the Welsh Government and financial backing from the Principality Building Society, and is being developed by the Tirion Group in partnership with Lovell.

Lovell expects to create 50 apprenticeships and other job and training opportunities over the life of the construction programme. The company is set to recruit 10 apprentices this year to work at The Mill.

“Investing in the local community, including bringing new jobs and training for local people is at the heart of the work we are doing in Canton,” says Lovell regional training advisor Darryl Williams.

“Alongside the homes being created at the former paper mill, we’re committed to extending the positive impact throughout the area. Our extremely active community engagement programme stretches from activities with local school students and support for local events and charities to helping local unemployed people gain valuable construction experience and qualifications.”

Community projects delivered so far include a highly successful Prince’s Trust Get into Construction programme. The intensive three-week course based at The Mill site earlier this year, gave 16 unemployed young people, aged 18-25, from Cardiff the opportunity to improve their employability skills, gain a health and safety qualification and a Construction Skills Certification Scheme card (an essential qualification for working in the construction industry). After completing the programme, one of the trainees has gone on to gain a trade apprenticeship with Lovell and three others have been employed by Lovell’s supply chain partners. Lovell is also about to roll out a scheme providing work placements for local unemployed people at The Mill in partnership with Jobcentre Plus and its supply chain.

As part of its community commitment, Lovell has been working closely with local schools including nearby Ysgol Treganna in Sanatorium Road where pupils have been set a project to name one of the new development’s streets and Fitzalan High School, where students took part in the Lovell House construction challenge. The company has also arranged for students from Cantonian High School to visit The Mill site. In addition, the Lovell team have been involved in community events, including volunteering at the Cardiff Blues annual tag rugby festival and taking part in the Cardiff Dragon Boat Festival.

Visitors to the Ely and Caerau Festival will also be able to talk to the Lovell sales team to find out more about the new homes for sale at The Mill where the first show apartment opened on 1 July. Following an exceptional response from homebuyers, homes currently available at The Mill start from £182,000 (£145,600 after a Help to Buy – Wales Equity Loan) for the two-bedroom Ashton house style with three-bedroom homes available from £255,000 (£204,000 after a Help to Buy – Wales Equity Loan). All homes at The Mill are also subject to an Estate Management service charge.

The new show apartment and marketing suite is open seven days a week, from 10am to 5pm at The Mill, Canton, Cardiff CF11 8DH. Alternatively, to find out more, please contact the Lovell sales team on 02920 606 766 or go to www.themill-canton.co.uk
