Two Lovell site managers working on major housing regeneration schemes in east Manchester are celebrating becoming winners in the National House-Building Council’s first-ever national Health and Safety Awards.
John, 58, has been rewarded for his management of The Way in Beswick where Lovell is working in partnership with New East Manchester and the local community on a major housing regeneration scheme to build 550 new homes for open market sale, affordable rent and shared ownership. Greg, 40, was selected for his work at the Fairfields development which Lovell is building in Openshaw. The project forms part of a £65 million, 432-home regeneration programme, overseen by New East Manchester, to replace terraced housing at Openshaw with new homes for rent and sale. The NHBC – the leading standard-setting and consumer protection body for new homes in the UK – launched the Health and Safety Awards in November 2009 to recognise housebuilders who demonstrate health and safety best practice. The awards are supported by the Health and Safety Executive and ConstructionSkills. John and Greg were both chosen for the award based on their consistent high standards noted in regular inspections by NHBC health and safety advisors. Lovell regional director Nigel Yates says: “John and Greg are two of our very best site managers and are both extremely passionate about what they do. They have both worked tirelessly to achieve the highest possible standards of health and safety at their sites and I’d like to thank them for their continued efforts.” John, who won the NHBC’s coveted Pride in the Job Quality Award for his work at The Way in both 2008 and 2009, says: “I was very pleased when I discovered that I’d won this award, especially as this is the first year it’s been presented. I’m really grateful to the inspectors from the NHBC who audit the site regularly as they give me lots of excellent feedback and ideas to introduce so that we can continue to improve our health and safety performance.” Greg says: “It’s the first time in my career that I’ve won anything like this and I’m delighted. We have an excellent team at Fairfields and everyone has played their part in securing this award. It’s my job to ensure that every member of staff understands the importance of good health and safety practice and that they are all aware of their responsibilities.” John and Greg received their awards at the first NHBC Health and Safety Awards ceremony, which was hosted by TV presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle, at The ICC, Birmingham. Simon Mantle, NHBC’s head of health and safety, commented: “As the housebuilding industry emerges from a difficult economic period, it’s the perfect time to recognise site managers who have maintained exceptional health and safety standards on site.
“We have been extremely impressed by the standard of health and safety that we have encountered throughout the judging process. These awards will play an important role in encouraging best practice and driving forward health and safety standards.” |

Senior site manager John Mather and site manager Greg Moore have each been chosen for a Commended award in the Best Site – Large Builder category. The award recognises the excellent health and safety standards the pair have maintained at the developments they are working on in Beswick and Openshaw.
