City College Norwich students get close-up view of Norwich housing development

Trainee bricklayers from City College Norwich had an exclusive look at a new housing development being built in the city by Lovell.

The Lovell project team gave the 18 Construction Craft Diploma students a guided tour, helping them understand how the construction process works and giving them the chance to see a live site in action. The visit was arranged through City College Norwich’s established partnership with Lovell which gives students the chance to benefit from the advice and guidance of the company’s construction professionals.

“This kind of visit allows students to see for themselves what working on site is like, talk to some of our team and find out more about the different jobs involved,” says Lovell regional training advisor Shirley Palmer. “It really helps them get a feel for life in the construction industry and the opportunities available.”

Mick Procner, programme manager of construction crafts at City College Norwich, says:
“It is invaluable that companies like Lovell provide opportunities for our students to see how what they are learning fits in with what will be required from them in the world of work.”

Martin Aust, Flagship’s strategy and development director, says: “We are absolutely delighted to be part of this community-driven initiative, especially as these apprentices are our construction workers for the future. We wish them well with their career development and hope that this visit will inspire and motivate the students involved.”

Other recent events organised through the partnership between the College and Lovell included a presentation by Lovell apprentice carpenter Joe Jackson and trainee bricklayer Matty Smith as part of National Apprenticeship Week. Joe and Matty, both former City College Norwich students, returned to their old college to talk to students about their careers and give a brief demonstration of some of the practical skills they have learned.
