28 new eco homes complete in Birmingham

A street of 28 new eco homes now graces Morville Street in Ladywood, Birmingham, thanks to the City Council’s award-winning house building programme – Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust (BMHT) - and its partners.

All properties have been built to meet Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes – a guideline to drive up standards in construction. Typical features of a Level 4 house include cavity, loft and under-floor insulation, on-site recycling of water, high efficiency boilers, renewable timbers and high performance double glazed windows and doors. The benefits to residents will include a reduction in annual energy bills.

Cllr John Lines, David Gough, Kerry-Ann Thomas, Jonathon Thomas and Elaine Elkington. The couple were receiving the keys to their new home.

The development of these properties is through collaboration between the City Council, Homes and Communities Agency, Capita Symonds and Lovell Partnerships Ltd. The homes are a mix of 2, 3 & 4 bed homes, some of which include garages. One of the 3-bed properties is fully designed for a wheelchair user.

The final tenants to be handed their keys are Mr and Mrs Thomas, who are delighted with their brand new home. The properties have been provided on council owned land that had been vacant for over 10 years. The handover marks the completion of the 28 homes built at Morville Street.

Cllr John Lines, Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “The completion of another batch of our eco homes can now be added to the 1,340 houses already completed, or in various stages of construction under the BMHT banner.

“Bringing new homes to local people is a special part of my job, to handover a key to give someone a home is a privilege. And not only will Mr and Mrs Thomas have the pleasure of moving into a brand new home, but they will also be able to take advantage of its benefits which include the prospect of lower bills.”

David Rhead, area manager for the HCA Midlands said: “We’re delighted to be supporting Birmingham City Council to deliver an ongoing programme of new homes with HCA investment. Morville Street is an example of our joint working and has transformed the area – providing a range of different homes, built to a high standard in design and sustainability.”
