In March 2007, Careers Wales Cardiff and the Vale celebrated its most valued partners at its annual awards ceremony aimed at promoting the commitment of schools, colleges and companies in developing Education Business Links. A total of 38 establishments were presented with ‘Most Valued Partner Awards’ during Careers Wales inaugural evening ceremony, hosted at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff on 1st March. Among those receiving an award was Lovell - one of the UK’s leading providers of affordable housing - which received a Curriculum Development Award (2006-07) ‘ Employer Award for Support to Secondary School Curriculum Development’ for its ongoing commitment and work with local schools through Careers Wales.
Staff at Lovell’s local office base in Cardiff, have worked in partnership with Careers Wales for numerous years, initially offering a week-long work experience placement to local school pupils. Lovell is now involved in a wide range of activities - offering opportunities for teacher placement days, mentoring schemes and site visits for pupils. The company also releases employees from work to visit local schools to undertake mock interviews and deliver construction day events. Mike Davis, Regional Training Advisor for Lovell, said: “In recent years, the construction industry has struggled to attract young people. In working with Careers Wales, our aim has been to offer first hand industry experience to pupils, and help raise awareness about the exciting job prospects open to them, and through this process we are able to identify potential candidates for our Craft and Management Academies” Rita Deegan, Education, Business & Adult Guidance Manager, praised Lovell for its commitment, and said: “Each year we host the awards to honor organisations which have made an outstanding contribution to one or more of the five key strategic areas of the work of Careers Wales. “Lovell is a very proactive company with Mike Davis playing a key role in delivering this activity. We hope to promote our partnerships even greater in the year ahead in association with our many other partners.”
