Considerate Constructors Scheme Bronze Awards 2008 – Ely Hospital Phase 2, Cardiff- St Mellons, Cardiff and Treberth, Newport
The Considerate Constructors Scheme Awards are designed to recognise and reward those who have demonstrated exceptional levels of consideration against the scheme's Code of Considerate Practice. Cardiff-based affordable housing and regeneration specialist Lovell has received three Considerate Constructors Awards for its sensitive, tidy and environmentally-friendly approach to construction work on three major housing schemes it has undertaken in Cardiff and Newport. Lovell, which has regional offices in Gwaelod Y Garth, Cardiff, received the awards from the Considerate Constructors Scheme – a national initiative designed to improve the image of construction through the better management and presentation of building sites.
The company received a bronze award for the second phase of a £5.8 million scheme it is carrying out in the Ely area of Cardiff, building 60 homes for Wales and West Housing Association. Lovell also picked up a bronze medal for phase two of an £8 million estate renewal project for Cardiff Council in St Mellons. In addition, Lovell received a further bronze award for a scheme to build 21 new homes as part of the £35 million Newport Prefabs regeneration scheme the company has successfully completed for Newport Housing Trust. To win the bronze awards, Lovell had to demonstrate its commitment to the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s code of practice which required the company to be sensitive to the local environment and community, display outstanding levels of health and safety, and liaise closely with local residents at all times. Lee Woodfine, Lovell project manager on the Ely scheme, and Wesley Morgan, senior site manager for Lovell on the St Mellons project, received the awards on the company’s behalf at a specially arranged ceremony held at Plaisterers Hall in London. The Considerate Constructors Scheme praised the Lovell site teams at both Ely and St Mellons for their efforts to keep local residents fully informed throughout the projects. At Ely, the company was commended for sending out introductory letters before work began on site and providing regular updates as the project progressed. At St Mellons, Lovell issued a newsletter for residents and also became involved with the wider community, working closely with a number of schools, the police and the local community centre. At Treberth, the Considerate Constructors Scheme praised the Lovell site team for establishing a good relationship with the local community in Newport and keeping them updated on how work was progressing through regular meetings. The company was also commended for its on site recycling policy and for making every effort to re-use any excavated materials. “We’re very pleased to have received these awards and I’d like to congratulate each of the project teams for their hard work in making this possible,” says Lovell regional director Nick Kurobasa. “We always make every effort to give the utmost consideration to the local communities we work in and keep disruption to their day-to-day activities to a minimum.” Further information is available on the Considerate Constructors Scheme website.
