Construction

I lay bricks and blocks to NHBC standards, ensuring building regulations are always met. I help to construct high quality houses, buildings and other masonry works, always ensuring properties and other environmental work is completed to tight schedules so that contracts can be finished on time.

My job involve the day-to-day running of a construction site. I look after the inductions of all workers and the safety of all staff and the general public. I supervise apprentices and sub-contract labour to ensure the workmanship complies with requirements. I assist in forming the construction programme and drawing up short term programmes as necessary. I am involved in agreeing all method statements, keeping all site records and maintaining the health and safety file.

I deal with day to day deliveries, storage of deliveries, directing site traffic, monitoring health and safety on site and reporting issues, and I am a general point of contact on site.

I am involved in the refurbishment of houses, which involves renewing all pipework in a property and replacing and installing kitchen and bathroom suites. Having started out shadowing a plumber, I am now able to complete first and second fix jobs myself.

I manage all commercial aspects of sites under my control. In practice, this means that I have responsibility for cost control and reporting on each project. I work on a project from initial tender to completion and undertake numerous tasks in that time. I need excellent communication skills as it is important to develop relationships with site teams, sub-contractors and the client.

I am in charge of checking the quality of workmanship to maintain standards on site, monitoring health and safety and ensuring work is carried out in a safe manner. I must also ensure that works are completed within the timescale of the programme. While on site, I check the right tradespeople have turned up and the right materials have arrived, before going out to the various houses to make sure work is progressing smoothly and safely.

It is a wide-ranging role that involves the co-ordination of sub-contactors, setting up sites and ensuring all utilities are in place, checking and issuing site drawings, and generally keeping jobs under review and keeping in close communication with both clients and contractors to ensure everything runs smoothly.
