Lovell has a special and long term relationship with Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire, which the majority of our apprentices attend on block release. We do use local colleges however when it is appropriate for the individual apprentice. We also work hard to provide general employer support to local colleges, as with this example from Norwich:
Students from City College in Norwich got the chance to take a closer look at a working construction site, thanks to local affordable housing specialist Lovell. The company, which has local offices in Thorpe Road, Norwich, invited a group of the College’s carpentry and bricklaying students to visit its site at All Saints Green where it is creating the new state-of-the-art YMCA facility – a £2.5 million, 34-bedroom hostel which is set to be completed this summer – for Flagship Housing Group.
Accompanied by the College’s programme manager of construction crafts Mick Procner, the students were given a guided tour of the site by the Lovell construction team to help give them a better understanding of the construction process and of working on a live site.
The site visit forms part of City College’s partnership with Lovell which sees its construction students receiving expert tutelage and guidance in their studies from the company’s skilled craftsmen and women. Earlier this year, Lovell regional training advisor Shirley Palmer attended City College to talk to the bricklaying and carpentry students about careers in the construction industry and some of the opportunities available to them with Lovell under the company’s apprenticeship scheme.
“ConstructionSkills, the sector skills council for construction, estimates that 88,000 new recruits are needed in the industry each year so events like this are vital for us in attracting people with the correct skills,” explains Shirley. “We have an excellent relationship with City College and hope that the visit gave the students an insight into the some of the tasks they would undertake if they chose to pursue a construction career.”
“City College’s Construction Crafts Division is committed to providing industry links to all of its courses,” says City College programme manager of construction crafts Mick Procner. “We are very grateful to Lovell for its help which enables us to provide a thorough education and training experience for our students so that they can rise to the challenges of tomorrow’s construction industry.”
