Maintenance apprenticeship

Image of a Lovell maintenance apprentice.The Maintenance apprenticeship is created around the Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Maintenance Operations. All NVQs are made up of units on different topics, and usually combine mandatory units which you must complete and optional units which you can choose from.

Below is a list of the units included in the Maintenance NVQ, with details of which topics are included in each unit.


Mandatory 

Unit No. 647 - Complete Works for Handing Over

This unit is about:

  • clearing the site after works are completed and ensuring finished works comply with specified requirements

  • demonstrating knowledge and understanding of procedures for the return of hired equipment and tools

  • demonstrating knowledge and understanding of security precautions required when clearing sites

  • demonstrating knowledge and understanding of types of visual checks and procedures for recording and rectifying defects.

Unit No. CS03 - Develop Customer Relationships

This unit is about:

  • creating a positive impression

  • delivering consistent and reliable customer service to encourage loyalty from external customers or longer term service partnerships with internal customers

  • building a better relationship with external customers.

Unit MR07 - Store Resources Ready for Use

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • storing materials safely and securely in a sequence ready for use, relating to your own occupation

  • working on contracts in industry.

Unit MR08 - Erect and Dismantle Working Platforms

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • erecting and dismantling working platforms relating to your own occupation

  • working on contracts in industry.

Unit MR09 - Contribute to Efficient Working Practices

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • planning and carrying out productive, efficient working practices

  • working in industry at your own occupation.

This unit is about:

Unit MR365 - Repair and Renew Basic Plumbing Components

This unit is about:

    adjusting, repairing and renewing basic plumbing components

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR366 - Renew Floor and Wall Tiling

This unit is about:

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • cutting out defective floor and wall tiling and backings

  • matching, installing and grouting floor and wall tiles

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR367 - Renew Sink and Sanitary Appliances

This unit is about:

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • removing and installing sinks and sanitary appliances

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR368 - Renew Rainwater Components

This unit is about:

Unit MR369 - Repair and Renew Fencing Components

This unit is about:

Unit MR370 - Install and Renew Ironmongery

This unit is about:

  • installing new ironmongery

  • removing and renewing door and window locks and furniture

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR371 - Prepare Surfaces and Apply Paint Systems by Brush and Roller

This unit is about:

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • preparing wood, metal and plastered surfaces to make good after repairs/renewals

  • matching paint colours and type

  • calculating amount of paint required, applying paint by brush and roller to prepared surfaces in small non-complex areas

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR372 - Renew Small Areas of Wall Covering to Non-complex Locations

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • cutting back and removing small areas of damaged wall covering

  • matching wall covering to existing wall coverings

  • preparing surfaces to receive wall covering

  • hanging wallpapers to align with and joint up to existing wall coverings

  • working on maintenance contracts

Unit MR373 - Repair Proprietary Wall and Ceiling Components

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • erecting suitable access platforms; cutting out defective areas to proprietary wall and ceiling systems

  • making good dry lining; renewing proprietary ceiling panels

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR374 - Repair Masonry

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • cutting out defective brickwork and block work in situations not requiring additional support

  • making good brickwork and block work to match existing work

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR375 - Repair Plaster Finishes to Walls and Ceilings

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • cutting out and removing defective plasterboard

  • cutting out and removing defective plaster finishes to walls

  • renewing plaster and making good to match existing plaster finishes; working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR376 - Repair Slate and Tile Pitched Roof Coverings

This unit is about:

  • working off a scaffold erected by others

  • removing small defective areas of roof coverings; renewing small areas of roof coverings

  • removing and re-bedding ridge and hip tiles

Unit MR377 - Repair and Replace Concrete Slabs and Paving

This unit is about:

Unit MR379 - Repair Rendering to Vertical Surfaces

Unit MR380 - Repair Glazing Installations (up to 1.5m)

  • repairing defective glazing to wooden windows and doors

Unit MR381 - Repair Proprietary Flashings at Roof Junctions

This unit is about:

  • selecting and preparing materials and components; accessing roof areas

  • locating defective flashings at roof junctions

  • repairing small faults in flashings

  • removing and renewing defective flashings

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR382 - Repair Floor Screeds

This unit is about:

  • selecting and preparing materials and components

  • cutting out defective floor screeds

  • preparing background surfaces and laying and trowelling floor screeds to match existing screeds

  • working on maintenance contracts.

Unit MR75 - Erect and Dismantle Access Platforms (up to 5m high)

This unit is about:

  • selecting components

  • erecting and dismantling scaffolds and access equipment (up to 5m high) for your own use
