Decorating apprenticeship

lovell_web_13.jpgThe painting and decorating apprenticeship is created around the Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations. All NVQs are made up of units on different topics, and usually combine mandatory units which you must complete and optional units which you can choose from.

Below is a list of the units included in the Painting NVQ, with details of which topics are included in each unit.


Mandatory units

Unit No. VR 01 - Conform to General Workplace Safety

This unit is about:

  • awareness of relevant current statutory requirements and official guidance

  • personal responsibilities relating to workplace safety, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with warning/safety signs

  • personal behaviour in the workplace

  • security in the workplace.

Unit No. VR 02 - Conform to Efficient Work Practices

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • planning and carrying out productive, efficient working practices

  • working with others or as an individual.

Unit No. VR 03 - Move and Handle Resources

This unit is about:

  • following instructions

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • Selecting materials, components and equipment

  • handling, moving and storage of materials and components by manual procedures and lifting.

Unit No. VR 250 - Erect and Dismantle Access/Working Platforms

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials, components and associated equipment

  • providing protection to the work area

  • erecting and dismantling access equipment suitable for the work operations.

Unit No. VR 332 - Prepare Surfaces for Painting/Decorating

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and associated equipment

  • providing protection to the work area - preparing surfaces in readiness to receive decorative/protective finishes in industrial and/or non-industrial situations.

Unit No. VR 333 - Apply Paint Systems by Brush and Roller

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and associated equipment

  • providing protection to the work area

  • applying water-borne and solvent-borne coatings by brush and roller in industrial and/or non-industrial situations.

Unit No. VR 336 - Hang Wallcoverings (Standard Papers)

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and associated equipment

  • providing protection to the work area

  • hanging cross-lining, blown vinyl and patterned paper in non-complex locations.

Unit No. VR 337 - Hang Wide-width Vinyls

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and associated equipment

  • providing protection to the work area

  • hanging wide-width fabric-backed and paper-backed vinyls to walls.

Unit No. VR 338 - Install Coving, Centre-pieces and Texture Products

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and associated equipment

  • providing protection to the work area

  • the installation of paper-faced coving products

  • the installation of lightweight centre-pieces

  • brush, stippler and roller produced textured finishes.

Unit No. VR 340 - Apply Coatings by the Air Spray Method

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and associated equipment

  • providing protection to the work area

  • assembling and setting up the spray system (conventional/HVLP systems)

  • applying coatings with air spray equipment

  • cleaning out and maintaining the air spray equipment.

Unit No. VR 341 - Produce Broken Colour Work and Basic Stencilling

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting and preparing materials and associated equipment

  • providing protection to the work area

  • preparing grounds and producing broken colour effects

  • positioning and applying pre-supplied stencil designs to surfaces.

Unit No. VR 342 - Produce and Apply Complex Stencil Designs

NVQ Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting - Level 3

Just to whet your appetite, if you successfully complete your apprenticeship and perform well on site, you could be offered an advanced apprenticeship with Lovell. The units which make up the Level 3 NVQ are:
