Carpentry apprenticeship

Image of carpentry tools.The carpentry apprenticeship is created around the Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Wood Occupations. All NVQs are made up of units on different topics, and usually combine mandatory units which you must complete and optional units which you can choose from.

Below is a list of the units included in the carpentry NVQ, with details of which topics are included in each unit.


Mandatory units 

Unit No. VR 01 - Conform to General Workplace Safety

This unit is about:

  • awareness of relevant current statutory requirements and official guidance

  • personal responsibilities relating to workplace safety, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with warning/safety signs

  • personal behaviour in the workplace

  • security in the workplace.

Unit No. VR 02 - Conform to Efficient Work Practices

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • planning, organising and adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • planning and carrying out productive, efficient working practices

  • working with others or as an individual.

Unit No. VR 03 - Move and Handle Resources

This unit is about:

  • following instructions

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting materials, components and equipment

  • handling, moving and storage of materials and components by manual procedures and lifting.


Optional units 

You choose any three units from the following:

Unit No. VR 09 - Install First Fixing Components

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting materials, components and equipment

  • preparing and carrying out first fixing.

Unit No. VR 10 - Install Second Fixing Components

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting materials, components and equipment

  • preparing and carrying out second fixing.

Unit No. VR 11 - Erect Structural Carcassing Components

This unit is about:

  • Installing studwork

  • Door frames and liners

  • Upper floor joists and ruff trusses.

Unit No. VR 12 - Maintain Non-structural Carpentry Work

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting materials, components and equipment

  • repairing defective timber frames, mouldings, sash cords, and painting repaired area and making good.

Unit No. VR 13 - Set Up and Use Circular Saws

This unit is about:

  • interpreting information

  • adopting safe and healthy working practices

  • selecting materials, components and equipment

  • setting up fixed and/or transportable machinery and sawing to size timber and timber-based sheet material and/or non-ferrous metal.


NVQ Wood Occupations - Level 3

Just to whet your appetite, if you successfully complete your apprenticeship and perform well on site, you could be offered an advanced apprenticeship with Lovell. The units which make up the Level 3 NVQ are:

Mandatory units 

  • Unit No. VR 01 - Conform to General Workplace Safety

  • Unit No. VR 209 - Confirm Work Activities and Resources for the Work

  • Unit No. VR 210 - Develop and Maintain Good Working Relationships

  • Unit No. VR 211 - Confirm the Occupational Method of Work

  • Unit No. VR 09 - Install First Fixing Components

  • Unit No. VR 10 - Install Second Fixing Components

Optional units (any two units from the following)

  • Unit No. VR 11 - Erect Structural Carcassing Components

  • Unit No. VR 24 - Erect Complex Structural Carcassing Components

  • Unit No. VR 25 - Maintain Non-structural and Structural Components

  • Unit No. VR 26 - Set Up and Use Fixed or Transportable Machinery
