Tim Kelly

Job title:

Quantity surveyor

What does your job involve?

I manage all commercial aspects of sites under my control. In practice, this means that I have responsibility for cost control and reporting on each project. I work on a project from initial tender to completion and undertake numerous tasks in that time. I need excellent communication skills as it is important to develop relationships with site teams, sub-contractors and the client.

When the site becomes live, I am responsible for the on-site management of costs, which involves procurement of sub-contractors. I liaise with the client on financial matters, including variations to the contract, cash flow forecasting and agreeing monthly valuations of the work completed on site to allow us to apply for payment. I also check and process all sub-contract payments. I produce a series of monthly reports that analyse the financial performance of each site and compare that performance against the forecast. Where differences are highlighted, I have to be able to explain why.

When the project is complete, I am responsible for agreeing final accounts with all sub-contractors and the client, ensuring that we have reclaimed all costs and achieved best value.
