What are the primary responsibilities in your role?    As Procurement Manager I take responsibility for the materials we buy nationally - bricks, blocks, kitchens, doors – all types of products & services really. I negotiate Trading Agreements with our supply chain, including partnering and other longer term partnering arrangements where appropriate, and make sure that the agreements work.      

 

Please provide a summary of your career since leaving school:

I left school at 18, and joined Lovell in Manchester soon after as a trainee Buyer. After that I was promoted through various levels of seniority, and eventually moved to our Midlands office as a Regional Buyer. 4 Years ago I took my current position at head office as Central Procurement Manager.

 

What encouraged you to join the construction industry?      

I knew someone who worked for Lovell and they recommended I join.

 

What qualifications did you start your career with?   

7 O Levels & 2 A Levels.

 

What further qualifications or training have you achieved during your construction career?           

ONC in Building Studies, plus numerous management & safety courses. 

 

What are the good and bad bits about your job?       

I enjoy putting together a good deal, one that works for both Lovell & the Supplier, and seeing the relationship grow.

Bad bits are really when things don’t work as expected.

 

Where would you like to take your career in the future?       

Procurement Director, with Lovell or another Morgan Sindall company.

 

Was there anyone particularly supportive in your career who has helped you to perform or progress?

Generally everyone at Lovell who I’ve worked for has been great at passing on knowledge & also allowing me to take new responsibilities on.

 

What is a typical salary band for this role?

Salaries for Buyers range from £18000 to £80000.
