Bricklaying Apprenticeship

Image of a Lovell apprentice in bricklaying.The bricklaying apprenticeship is created around the Level 2  National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Trowel Occupations (the site-based learning) and the Level  2 Diploma in Bricklaying (the college-based qualification).

Below is a list of the units included in the bricklaying Diploma Level 2, with details of which topics are included in each unit.

 

CC 1001K – Know how to carry out safe working practices in construction

1. Know the health and safety regulations – roles and responsibilities
2. Know the accident / first aid / emergency procedures and reporting
3. Know how to identify hazards on construction sites
4. Know about health and hygiene
5. Know about safe handling of materials and equipment6. Know about basic working platforms
7. Know how to work with electricity
8. Know how to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
9. Know the fire and emergency procedures10. Know about signs and notices 

CC 1001S – Carry out safe working practices in construction

CC 2002K –
Knowledge of information, quantities and communicating with others
1. Know how to interpret and produce building information
2. Know how to estimate quantities of resources
3. Know how to communicate workplace requirements efficiently

CC 2003K –
Knowledge of building methods and construction technology
1. Know the principles behind walls, floors and roofs
2. Know the principles behind internal work
3. Know about materials storage, and delivery of building materials 

CC 2003S –
Building methods and construction technology
1. Apply the principles behind walls, floors and roofs
2. Apply the principles behind internal work
3. Deal with material storage and delivery of building materials 

CC 2045K –
Know how to interpret working drawings to set out masonry structures
1. Know how to interpret information to establish setting-out requirements
2. Know how to prepare construction sites for setting-out activities 

CC 2045S –
Interpret working drawings to set out masonry structures
1. Interpret information to establish setting out requirements
2. Prepare construction sites for setting out activities
3. Select resources for setting out work
4. Set out regular-shaped masonry structures on level ground 

CC 2046K –
Knowledge of thin joint masonry and masonry cladding
1. Know how to construct buildings using thin joint blockwork to required specification

3. Know how to construct masonry for use with concrete- and steel-framed buildings torequired specification

Practical Tests


Task A: Set out and build a garden wall including an attached pier and a free-standing isolated pier
(time guide 12 hours)
Task B: Set out and build brick/block cavity walling incorporating cavity insulation and a window (time guide 6 hours)
Task C: Set out and build a half brick cladding to a timber frame panel (time guide 6 hours)
Task D: Set out a rectangular building including setting corner profiles and transferring datum level (time guide 4 hours)
