BTEC National Certificate in Construction

Image of Lovell Management Development Academy. A BTEC National Certificate is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen, you develop the skills you need to start a career. It is equivalent to two A levels which means when you have finished the course you can choose whether to get a job straight away or go into Higher Education first.

A BTEC National Certificate can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis and is equally suitable for school leavers and mature students.


What are the entry requirements?

You will normally need to have at least one of the following:

  • a BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject

  • an Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject

  • at least four GCSEs at grades A*-C (to include science, mathematics and English)

  • appropriate knowledge and/or experience gained at work or from other related qualifications.


What is the course structure?

The course is made up of 12 units - five core units, which everyone takes, five specified specialist units and a choice of two further specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in depth.


What subjects will I study?

The five core units are:

  • Health, Safety & Welfare

  • Construction and the Environment

  • Construction Technology and Design #

  • Construction Science and Materials

  • Analytical Methods.

The compulsory specified specialist units are:

  • Planning, Organisation and Control of Resources

  • Graphical Detailing

  • Surveying Processes

  • Building Technology #

  • Building Surveying.

The specialist units are:

  • Measuring, Tendering and Estimating Processes

  • Environmental Science

  • Building Regulations and Control

  • ICT and CAD

  • Valuation

  • Employer-Related Project

  • Planning Procedures

  • Property Law

  • Land Information

  • Surveying Technology

  • Topographic Surveying.

# These units contribute towards the externally assessed Integrated Vocational Assignment (IVA).


How is the course assessed?

All units are assessed, and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.
