BTEC HNC in Construction

Image of a Lovell employee on site. The BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a specialist vocational programme with a strong work related emphasis. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in construction with national recognition by employers such as Lovell allowing progression direct into employment or to degree.

In addition to the HNC, this programme includes a relevant NVQ Level 3 qualification.

What are the entry requirements?

You will normally need to have at least one of the following:

  • a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in an appropriate area

  • an AVCE/GNVQ in an appropriate vocational area

  • a GCE A level profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or an adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at level A-C.

  • other related Level 3 qualifications

  • an Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved Further Education institution

  • related work experience.

More mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience (paid or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.

What is the course structure?

The course is made up of ten units - six core units, which everyone takes, and four specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in depth. At least five of the ten units you select must be designated at H2 level.

What subjects will I study?

The six core units are:

  • Design Principles and Application (H1)

  • Science and Materials (H1)

  • Analytical Methods (H1)

  • Management Principles and Application (H2)

  • Group Project (H2)

  • Health, Safety and Welfare (H2)

The specialist units are shown in the list below. To follow a particular discipline, select from the specialist units indicated in the relevant column:

How is the course assessed?

Each unit is internally assessed and graded by lecturers. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit or Distinction. There is no overall grade awarded for this qualification.

What can I do at the end of the course?

A key progression path for BTEC Higher National Certificate and Diploma learners is to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme, depending on the match of the BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question. Alternatively, successful candidates can enter employment with Lovell or undertake further, more specialist study.
